Feasibility Study On Air Freight And Logistics For The Creation Of A Food Distribution Center (Sioux-Lookout Economic Development)
The municipality of Sioux Lookout and the KI and Lac Seul First Nations mandated our firm to evaluate the feasibility to develop an air cargo facility at the Sioux Lookout Airport to increase healthy food accessibility and reduce the cost of food and health materials in the north. This study evaluates food distribution networks, key suppliers operations and procedures, warehousing requirements and air cargo routes in Northern Ontario.
Our team estimated the shipping, distributing and warehousing costs, and evaluated logistical and operational requirements to identify optimal transportation routes and distribution networks to deliver healthy and essential goods in the north. A wide range of consultations with First Nations, air carriers, food producers and distributors, logistics companies and government was also undertaken to validate findings, cost estimates and financial projections.
The study concluded in the feasibility to develop a financially-sustainable food distribution hub in Sioux Lookout to provide regular air cargo shipments of fresh produces and essential products to the northern Ontario communities. The report findings were used to develop the conceptual business plan for the proposed facility and funding applications to the provincial and federal governments.
