West-Kootenay Regional Airport Master Plan (CYCG)
Explorer Solutions was part of the Master Plan team for the West Kootenay Regional Airport. CYCG is a certified airport with one 5,299 / 150 feet runway. The airport is home to 15 general aviation and corporate hangars and one small flight school. The airport is in the middle of the Rockies, and terrain raises many issues with approaches, fog and other weather-related situations hampering flight operations.
Our work included conducting a large series of consultations, an air service study, a very comprehensive highest and best land use plan to generate growth and investment attraction for airside and groundside parcels of land. Amongst various options, this task looked at leveraging a hotel addon to the on-site casino, opening up a 50-acre parcel of land for commercial and industrial use, and adding a general aviation hangar to re-attract pilots and aircraft that were pushed away by improper management several years prior. The plan also included all requirements of a regular master plan, including airport portrait, stakeholder engagement, forecasting, limited airside and groundside conditions assessments, land use, options analysis (terminal, airside, groundside), capital plan and a phased development plan.
